Will Birch English discography

WILL BIRCH föddes 12 september 1948 i östra London och flyttade till Southend-on-Sea som 10-åring. Runt 1959/1960 spelade Will i The Vikings, en skolorkester med skiffle som specialitet.
   - We only played a couple of school concerts. I played banjo and did the vocal – we had about three Lonnie Donegan songs including ‘Worried Man’. I don’t remember all the other boys, but Duncan Ford was on guitar and Keith Summers on washboard, I think. A teacher by the name of Mr Stokes played piano to add some musicality.

Förutom Wills intresse, som gränsade till besatthet, för The Shadows och The Beatles var han inte med i några fler band förrän i slutet på 1964 då han gick med i The Tradewinds, som inte ska förväxlas med den amerikanska gruppen med samma namn.
   - I played drums, having given up on banjo and guitar (and vocals). I was at school with Dave Mattacks (later Fairport Convention) and he helped me put my first drum kit together. The Tradewinds did mainly R&B and pop covers.
   Will berättar också en anekdot från 1965:
   - In early 1965 the BBC came to Southend Youth Club (where we played twice a week) looking for kids to take part in a TV documentary ‘The Young Adults’ about teenagers and sex. The BBC saw us playing and asked us to be in the programme. We recorded two tracks at BBC Broadcasting House – Dobie Gray’s ‘The In Crowd’ and a song I co-wrote, which I think is ‘We’re The Now Generation’, but I don’t remember much about it other than the line ‘we grow our hair and we don’t care’. We then mimed to the tracks in various Southend locations such as the pier. Unfortunately, the BBC wiped the film, although a brief section from it (not with The Tradewinds) recently turned up on the web.

The Tradewinds existerade från sent 1964 till sent 1965. Medlemmarna gruppens första upplaga var förutom Will på trummor Don Jackson, bas, Owen Knight, gitarr, Dave Ludlow, sång (som blev ombedd att sluta), och Dennis Jackson, gitarr. I den andra upplagan (1965) var Derek Piggott ny sångare och Ron Scorah ny gitarrist.

När Tradewinds splittrades spelade Will redan med en ny redan existerande grupp, The Flowerpots, ännu en lokal R&B-grupp. Under 1965 hoppade Will in på en del gig och bandet i övrigt var John Potter, piano, Jim Cotier, gitarr, Ray Burgoyne, trummor, Graham Fox, bas och sång, och Mick Smyth, munspel och sång. En senare upplaga (1966) av gruppen hade Wilko Johnson på gitarr.

1966 bildade Will den tillfälliga gruppen The Urge tillsammans med Owen Knight. Gruppen genomförde bara en enda spelning och Will minns idag inte namnen på de övriga medlemmarna.

Samma år i juni återvände Will till den femte upplagan av The Flowerpots som existerade fram till juni 1967. Förutom Will var det Wilko Johnson, gitarr, John Potter, piano, Graham Fox, sång och bas, och John Smith, bas (som senare ersattes av Phil Thumpston).

Nästa grupp med Will som medlem blev The Surly Bird, sommaren 1969 till maj 1970. Övriga medlemmar var Paul Shuttleworth, sång, Dave Murdock, bas, Graeme Douglas, gitarr, och Stuart Cook, saxofon. Sedan utökades gruppen med fiolspelaren Fred Wheeler fram till juli 1970 då Shuttleworth lämnade gruppen.
   I april 1971 bytte bandet namn till Glory, Douglas lämnade gruppen och kvarvarande medlemmar började spela fler instrument, Murdock på akustisk gitarr, Cook på saxofon och Wheeler på gitarr. Innan gruppen splittrades.

I Cow Pie, som Will spelade med från januari 1972 till april 1972, återförenades många tidigare sångare och musiker. Förutom Will var det Paul Shuttleworth, sång, Dave Murdock, gitarr och sång, Chris Underhill, bas och sång, Fred Wheeler, fiol, och Vic Collins, Pedal Steel och sång.

Birch, Shuttleworth och Collins bildade i juni 1972 The Hot Jets med återvändande Graeme Douglas, gitarr, och Phil Mitchell, bas. Gruppen splittrades i juli 1972, ett drygt år innan första upplagan av THE KURSAAL FLYERS lyfte i oktober 1973 med många bekanta ansikten: Will Birch, trummor, Paul Shuttleworth, sång, Graeme Douglas, gitarr och sång, Dave Hatfield, bas, Vic Collins, Pedal Steel och sång, och Richie Bull, banjo och gitarr.

   Gruppen tog sitt namn efter tåget som körde turister i Southend och bandets premiärspelning skedde på The Blue Boar pub på Victoria Avenue i Southend-on-sea i februari 1974. Då spelade gruppen huvudsakligen covers på countryrocklåtar men började då skriva eget material. I maj 1974 hoppade Will tillfälligt in i Charlie & The Wide Boys på två spelningar.
   Hösten 1974 fick gruppen en manager i Paul Conroy och deltog i en spektakulär julshow på Roundhouse i London tillsammans med Chilli Willi & the Red Hot Peppers, Ace och Brinsley Schwarz som uppträdde under namnet The Electricians.
   När Kursaals i januari 1975 blev professionella lämnade Hatfield gruppen som gjorde att Bull även fick spela bas. Våren 1975 fick gruppen ett skivkontrakt med UK Records, Jonathan Kings etikett som under flera år firat stora listframgångar med 10cc som då precis hade lämnat bolaget.

Våren 1975, innan Kursaals hade givit ut en enda skiva, turnerade bandet tillsammans med amerikanska Flying Burrito Brothers i Europa och England.

Vid sitt första besök i skivinspelningsstudion fick Kursaals den rutinerade producenten Hugh Murphy som sedan slutet av 60-talet jobbat med bland annat Alan Hull (från Lindisfarne), Gerry Rafferty, Jack The Lad och String Driven Thing. Alla artister med ett folkmusik-inriktat sound.

   A-sidan är något kortare än på albumet och b-sidan förekommer här i hela sitt skick jämfört med på albumet där låten delas upp i två delar. Låtskrivaren Dave Murdoch är givetvis en felstavad Dave Murdock som 1972 spelade med Will Birch i en annan grupp, Cow Pie, och nu var gruppens roadie..

   Två albumlåtar men A-sidan är ommixad jämfört med albumversionen.

Inspelningen av Kursaal Flyers andra album, "The great artiste", kom snabbt på efter debutskivan och det var meningen av skivbolagschefen Jonathan King skulle producera men i praktiken blev det bandet självt (med Will Birch i en nyckelroll) tillsammans med teknikern Barry Hammond som till slut fick göra det i Chipping Norton Recording Studios.

   Ännu en gång är åtta av albumets tio låtar signerade Will Birch. Gruppens cover av Nick Lowes "Television" är låtens premiär på skiva, tre år innan Dave Edmunds gav ut den på "Tracks on wax 4" (1978).
   Det ska nämnas att Graeme Douglas förutom sologitarr även spelar kompgitarr, 12-strängad gitarr, slide, orgel och moog på albumet.

   Vad som skulle bli Kursaal Flyers kommersiellt mest framgångsrikaste singel släpptes också som en promo där "Little does she know" på b-sidan är en "DJ Long Version" på 5:10. En version som inte finns tillgänglig någon annanstans.


Efter "Golden mile"-inspelningarna med nye producenten Mike Batt och en påföljande turné tyckte Graeme Douglas att Kursaals blivit för kommersiell och lämnade gruppen i februari 1977 för att börja spela med Eddie & the Hot Rods. Han ersattes av Southend-musikern Barry Martin som tidigare (juli 1973-januari 1974) spelat med Eddie & the Blizzards och faktiskt tillsammans med Graeme Douglas.

   Ny producent i Vic Maile (Dr Feelgood, Pirates och Tom Robinson Band). Skivan är inspelad live 3 och 4 maj 1977 på Marquee Club i London med nye gitarristen Barry Martin. Mixad i Jackson's Studio, Rickmansworth, i juli 1977.
   Av skivans tretton låtar är åtta låtar utgivna med Kursaals tidigare. Två låtar, "Original model" och "TV dinners", är helt nya och skrivna av Will Birch. Dessutom avslutas skivan med tre covers. "Anna (go to him)" är en Arthur Alexander-singel från 1962, "Friday on my mind" är en Easybeats-hit från 1966 och "On my mind" är en Mike Berry-singel från januari 1964.   


I augusti 1977 lämnar Vic Collins gruppen och ersätts av ytterligare en Southend-musiker, John Wicks. Nu är steelguitaren ersatt av en vanlig kompgitarr och Will Birch har fått en ny låtskrivarpartner.

   A-sidan är en ny studioinspelad låt och b-sidan är hämtad från liveskivan "Five Live Kursaal".



När Kursaal Flyers till slut sprack i november 1977 hade Will Birch redan funnit sin låtskrivarpartner, John Wicks, i samma grupp och började genast skriva låtar tillsammans. I planerna fanns också en ny grupp, THE RECORDS, som musikaliskt skulle vara en mix av Raspberries, Badfinger, Big Star och "Revolver" (Beatles-albumet).
   18 januari 1978 höll John och Will audition i Hollywood Studios, London E8, för basister och rekryterade Phil Brown medan förstavalet av gitarrist inte gick lika fort. Brian Alterman(ex-Shanghai) hoppade av efter några veckor. Efter ännu en audition 10 mars 1978, nu i Alaska Studios, London SE1, blev den vänsterhänte Huw Gower bandets nye gitarrist som tidigare hade spelat i Bristol-bandet Dragons.
   Bara några veckor senare gjorde bandet scendebut och följande spelningar genomfördes under våren 1978:

I oktober och november 1978 turnerade The Records med Be Stiff Route 78 Tour där de huvudsakligen kompade den unga amerikanska sångerskan Rachel Sweet men gjorde också egna framträdanden som ibland (Leeds, Hull och Portrush) spelades in. Av vilka några låtar släpptes som b-sidor och bonusspår på senare skivor med The Records.

   Gruppens debutsingel med två egna låtar. Här har jag berättat lite mer om historien kring den här första The Records-singeln. Research gav mig då uppgiften att NB i prefixen stod för No Bad men Will påstår nu annat:
   - The first pressing of Starry Eyes 45 was done by Virgin around the time we were signing with them. They paid the studio costs but we said we wanted ‘our own label’ hence ‘The Record Company’. NB stood for ‘no bullshit’, we were that arrogant.

   Rachel Sweet, blott 16 år vid tillfället, gjorde en sensationellt fräck countryversion av Devos "Be Stiff" kompad av The Records.
   “Be Stiff tour”-skivan gick bara att köpa på postorder från Stiff genom att skicka med en del av biljetten från någon av konserterna på turnén.

KURSAAL FLYERS: Route 66 (Bobby Troup)
   Samlingsskiva med inspelningar, ofta äldre, med artister och grupper från Southend-on-sea-området. Övriga artister bland annat Mickey Jupp, Steve Hooker Band och Deano's Marvels. Skivan är utgiven för att marknadsföra Southend som "Music City 1979". Skivan producerades som välgörenhet och behållningen donerades till Billericay Burns Unit.
   Kursaals gör den välkända coverlåten som skrevs redan 1946, spelades först in av Nat King Cole men har sedan gjorts av alla från Rolling Stones till Depeche Mode.

   Med första albumet ute, skivkontrakt med Virgin och vissa framgångar i USA gavs bandets debutsingel ut igen, nu på Virgin-etikett. Trots skivnummer en mycket sällsynt raritet som vi dessvärre inte hittat under all research. Inte ens Will Birch känner till den:
   - I have no knowledge of it ever being repressed with the catalogue number VS305. Perhaps they scheduled it but it was never released. We did quite well with Starry eyes in the USA that summer so maybe they thought they would give it another try in the UK then changed their minds. Just a theory.




Olika omslag för olika marknader i olika länder. Här är några exempel på hur några singelomslag med The Records har ändrat utseende på olika platser. Övre raden är "Starry eyes"-singeln från Holland (till vänster) och USA. Och till höger är det amerikanska omslaget till "Hearts in her eyes".






Huw Gower lämnade The Records hösten 1979 och ersattes 1980 av 19-årige amerikanen Jude Cole, på rekommendation av nye skivproducenten Craig Leon, som tidigare spelat med Moon Martin.

   Bandets andra album innehöll tio originallåtar av vilka en, "Man with a girl-proof heart", härstammade från Kursaals-tiden. Inspelningarna inleddes med ex-Kursaals-gitarristen Barry Martin och även Dave "Clem" Clempson och Chris Stein (Blondie) gästar på gitarr liksom Craig Leon på keyboards.


Hösten 1980 lämnade amerikanen Jude Cole gruppen och ersattes av två engelska killar, gitarristen Dave Whelan och sångaren Chris Gent, tidigare i en grupp som hette The Autographs, som också spelade saxofon.

   Samlingsskiva med Kursaal Flyers som först släpptes i Tyskland, två år innan den släpptes i England med identiskt innehåll men med ett annat omslag. Den tyska pressningen finns även i vit vinyl. Omslaget är designat Barney Bubbles.
   "Walking to school" (inspelad i november 1975) "Girlfriend kinda guy", "Everything but a heartbeat" och "Girls that don't exist" (alla tre inspelade i september 1977) gavs aldrig ut av gruppen förrän på den här samlingsskivan. The Records tog över "Girls that don't exist" i sin repertoar och gav ut den på sitt första album 1979 och Searchers gav ut en version av "Everything but a heartbeat" på ett album, "Love's melodies", redan 1981.
   Outgivna "The questionnaire" är en outtake (inspelad i april 1977) producerad av Mike Batt. Sex av albumets åtta låtar på sidan ett är ommixade i januari 1982.

   En skiva med demoinspelningar där samtliga låtar är skrivna av Will Birch på egen hand. Gjord tidigt i The Records karriär med Huw Gower som gitarrist. Enligt Will Birch-intervjun i Larm 1978 var "Night driving" på gång att spelas in av Dave Edmunds.

   En samlingskassett med Southend-artister utgiven av Steve Hooker. Kursaals-låten är titellåten från senaste albumet. Steve minns inte riktigt hur många ex kassetten såldes i, någonstans mellan 100 och 500... Han förklarar mer:
   - The cassette was compiled from master tapes loaned by the artists and mastered on two TEAC and Revox machines owned by Wilko Johnson. It was released independently on El Pachuco Records which was a label name we used for merchandise only Shakers, Hooker Band and one Flaco Jimenez release - distributed via the Projection and Waterfront network.

Jag är född 1952. Skrev min första recension i januari 1970. Har medverkat regelbundet i Nerikes Allehanda i över 45 år med recensioner, krönikor, artiklar och intervjuer.
